Topic: Taking Journalism Social
Speaker: Ryan Squire, NBC 4 Managing Editor
Location: TechColumbus. Get Directions »
Join us for an interactive discussion with Ryan Squire, Managing Editor of NBC 4, as he discusses his perspective on how social media has impacted the news. Currently, he and his team are using social media channels to reach out to their viewers, listen to their views and build relationships in the community. Quoting from Ryan’s blog, “Television and media have done enough talking TO you; I want to start talking WITH you”. Hear how he has embraced online tools such as Twitter and blogs to build a better newsroom.
Ryan Squire started his journalism career as a photojournalist in Buffalo, NY. He found a passion for telling stories through pictures and gathering information that was relevant to the people who were affected by the stories being told on WKBW.
In 2001, he moved to Columbus, OH and went to work telling video stories about the people who live in Central Ohio. Ryan was on the field as the Ohio State Buckeyes won their National Championship in 2003 and won an Emmy Award for his work at the 2003 Memorial Tournament.
What was clear to Ryan is that much of the “news” television was covering was breaking news, and while fun to watch and important to the few people affected by the stories, it was obvious that there was a greater purpose to the craft of journalism.
After learning and building an assignment desk, Ryan was chosen as the managing editor of NBC 4. He was immediately tasked with finding a new direction for the news that NBC 4 covered. The first task was to decide what NBC 4 should cover. To answer that question, he turned to research that had been done on the Columbus, OH audience.
However, research has its limitations. Ryan has begun to lead the transition from traditional media, to a form of media that revolves around the voice of the people in our community. Giving customers a voice in what stories are covered and involving them in the process has become a passion.
Ryan lives in Westerville, OH with his wife of 7 years, Kristen who is a Transition Coordinator for Dublin City Schools. Ryan and Kristen have two children, Will (3), and Anna (1).
